Collaborative Learning Statement

As a dynamic visual art teacher, I encourage students to explore inspiration, discover what art means, and the many forms of art-making, in a non-prescriptive way.

This enthusiasm for imagination, engaged discovery, and cultivating students own voice is what drives me to co-lead classes each day.

It is my goal to encourage students to embrace their artistic freedom, strengthen their practice, foster effective collaboration while incorporating meaningful lesson plans.

My work is based on an interdisciplinary content and on dialogue as useful tools to build upon many skills. Through a multitude of visual arts projects students have a chance to experiment, analyze and reflect. Mentoring individuals to problem solve, accepting mistakes as a step forward and not backward.

I believe this creates dynamic exchanges from each student to the whole classroom. The time together is understood as a team-building journey where my guidance ensures that all abilities can be accommodated.

Collaborative Learning Philosophy

Through research and planning, collaborative learning improves students interactions, enhances learning strategies and reduces anxiety. With a blend of classic drawing theory, a dash of history, a variety of cultural traditions, painting and coloring techniques, new thoughts and perspectives will be brought forth as a forum to be discussed.

It is very important to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable venturing beyond what is already known and learn how to share their thoughts. By taking the time to practice a newly learned technique or practice sharing their opinions, students become involved in the notions of flexibility, respect and gain conflict-management skills.

Utilizing some of the Reggio Emilia pedagogical values as well as some of Paulo Freire’s philosophy, I believe that students and teachers co-learn as uniquely creative individuals.  I incorporate these methodologies involving students in a variety of interdependent educational opportunities where their self-expression, critical thinking skills, and innovative problem-solving matter as positive growth-mindset experiences.

Through this, I am able to ensure children have a wonderful time learning in a safe, respectful and “idea-energizing” environment.
